Project 2

Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture

( 50%group )

This research-driven project aims to develop critical thinking and interpretation skills concerning globalization's impact on Asian architecture. Using a problem-based learning approach, we will engage in weekly group discussions with tutors to create an appraisal framework for analyzing significant issues and proposing solutions. The research will culminate in a research poster and a video presentation, each accounting for 50% of the final marks.

Tasks:

  • Form groups of 6-7 members to identify a significant issue from observations in Project 1.

  • Choose a research direction: architecture and place identity, adaptive reuse of traditional architecture, sustainable heritage tourism, or cultural space in cities.

  • Conduct a literature review to define the research scope, develop a title, and identify specific issues and their significance.

  • Create a detailed research poster and a 10-minute video presentation discussing the research and conclusions.

Outcomes:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical development of vernacular architecture in Asia.

  • Interpret contemporary issues in Asian architecture related to tradition, modernity, and globalization.

  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills by proposing informed solutions and effectively communicating findings through the research poster and video presentation.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I gained valuable insights into contemporary issues in Asian architecture, particularly the impact of globalization on tradition and modernity. Weekly group discussions deepened my understanding and critical analysis of architectural themes. Creating the research poster and video presentation improved my ability to visually and verbally convey complex ideas. However, more preliminary research would have provided a stronger foundation and enriched our analysis. Overall, this project was a transformative experience, enhancing my understanding of Asian architecture in socio-cultural and economic contexts and improving my research and presentation skills.
