PROJECT 02
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
( 30% GROUP )
This assignment is designed to demonstrate a thorough grasp and effective application of design principles by manipulating forms. It involves skillfully creating order within architectural compositions and spatial arrangements. The notion of order here goes beyond geometric regularity. instead, it pertains to a harmonious arrangement where each component is thoughtfully placed in relation to others and its intended purpose.
PART 1 – Individual Exploration
-
In a group 6, each group member has to choose one Design Principle to produce two Principle
Models (10cm x 10cm x 10cm) and compile in slides. -
Select one chosen Principle Model to produce five Orthographic Drawings in 1:1 scale.
PART 2 – Group Exploration
-
Collaborate with all six members to combine Design Principle Models for further exploration and manipulation of various volumetric forms and spaces. Through articulation and integration, create a single Hybrid Model (40cm H x 30cm L x 30cm W) and record in slide compilation.
TASK
PROGRESS
PART 1
SELECT DESIGN PRINCIPLE
I selected Rhythm as the principle of my Principles Models.
Choose 1 pattern created in Project 1 Part 1 and extract shapes from it. I extracted square shape through manipulation of triangles.
Research and study those selected buildings
PRINCIPLE MODEL 1
EXTRACTION OF SHAPES
BUILD MOCK-UP MODEL
I use different sizes of square shape to build a tunnel-like model to create a sense of direction.
BUILD FINAL MODEL
After the design is finalised, I build the final Principle Model1 using modeling board to create a sense of complexity and neatness.
Research and study those selected buildings
PRINCIPLE MODEL 2
EXTRACTION OF SHAPES
Choose 1 pattern created in Project 1 Part 1 and extract shapes from it. I extracted semicircle shapes through manipulation of a quadrilateral.
BUILD MOCK-UP MODEL
I used semicircle planes to create a spiral structure to create direction and movement
BUILD FINAL MODEL
After the design is finalised, I build the final Principle Model 2 using modeling board and add vertical planes on semicircle planes to create forms and volume.
FINAL MODEL COMPLETION
Use the semicircle forms to create a spiral structure according to mock-up model.
Research and study those selected buildings
ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING
Draw orthographic drawing of Principle Model 2 including Top View, Front View, Back View, Right View and Left View.
PART 2
BUILD MOCK-UP MODEL
Select one Principle Model from each members and combine them. We use limit our materials to satay sticks, white and brown modeling boards to create a similar design language. After careful consideration, we decide to eliminated Balance Principle Model as it has limited similar design language with other principle models.
BUILD HIBRID MODEL
After getting feedbacks from tutors, my group discuss about improvements for our model. After that, all members work together to build the hibrid model.
HIBRID MODEL COMPLETION
We applied the knowledges we learned from lectures to build this hibrid model.
SLIDE COMPILATION
Record the inspiration, design process and sketches, progress and images for Principle Models and Hibrid Model in slides.
OUTCOME
PART 1
RHYTHM PRINCIPLE MODEL 1
RHYTHM PRINCIPLE MODEL 2
PART 2
HIBRID MODEL
SLIDE COMPILATION
REFLECTION
Through this assignment, I learnt to explore multiple possibilities within one design principle. In addition, I learnt to connect models of different principals in the same language. I found it difficult at first, but I'm very satisfied with the results!
TGC AQUIRED
3.0:communication skills
This assignment allowed me to effectively communicate my understanding of design elements by creating models that embody design principles. The process involved exploring and manipulating these principles in order to deliver the intended content through the design.
