PROJECT 01
DESIGN ELEMENTS
( 20% INDIVIDUAL )
This assignment is designed to acquaint students with the fundamental building blocks of form, progressing in a logical sequence from the point, to a one-dimensional line, further to a two-dimensional plane, and ultimately culminating in a three-dimensional volume. The exploration of each element begins with its conceptual understanding, followed by its application as a visual component within the architectural design language.
PART 1 – Points & Lines (2D: Drawing/Sketches)
-
Choose 6 portrait reference images depicting interior spaces of buildings and combine them into the provided template.
-
Visibly mark and identify the POINTS on each of the images.
-
Create two-dimensional patterns by connecting the previously marked POINTS with LINES on the images.
-
Enhance the analysis by including descriptions that formally identify and interpret the patterns resulting from the connections.
PART 2 – Planes, Voids & Volume (3D: Models)
-
Choose one 1 pattern from PART 1 and translate it into a three-dimensional model on an A5-sized base (15cm x 21cm).
-
Identify the specific points and lines within the selected pattern that will be used to create planes and voids, resulting in the formation of space and volume. The shapes and forms should not exceed a height of 15cm.
-
The exploration of form should adhere to geometrical principles, encompassing both regular and irregular geometries.
-
Generate a minimum of 2 mock-up models varying in sizes and scales, before finalizing the design of 1 final model. The final model should fit within the dimensions of an A5 base (15cm x 21cm) and maintain a height not exceeding 15cm.
TASK
PROGRESS
PART 1
MARK POINTS
Search suitable interior spaces images from Pinterest. After that. identify and mark the points on the images.
CREATE PATTERNS
Connect the points in the images using straight lines according to my own narrative to create 2D patterns. Then, analyse the patterns(which techniques are used and what shapes are formed).
PART 2
CHOOSE PATTERN
Choose 1 pattern from PART 1 to act as the base of my 3D model. After taking consideration, I chose the pattern that I feel the most interesting and have potential to develop.
BUILD MOCK-UP MODEL 1
By using the pattern chosen as the base, I build up this mock-up model using satay sticks to form a 3D model. In this model, I emphasized the turning part of the pattern.
BUILD MOCK-UP MODEL 3
After getting feedbacks from tutors, I decide to combine both mock-up model 1 and 2 by combining both interesting parts. At the same time, I also refined the transformation between the two models to make this mock-up model 3 look like a whole and more interesting. This mock-up model is then finalised and proceed to volume and void development by using planes.
BUILD MOCK-UP MODEL 2
Also using the pattern chosen as the base, I use satay sticks to build this 3D model by focusing on the spreading part of the pattern.
DEVELOP VOLUME AND VOIDS
Develop volume and voids by introducing different type of planes(fully-covered and louvers). I introduce the planes to emphasis the two high out part of the model and create two levels of spaces in the model.
BUILD FINAL MODEL
Referring to mock-up model 3, I build the final model using satay sticks and modelling boards, and use super glue to stick them to ensure a neat outcome.
Research and study those selected buildings
FINAL MODEL COMPLETION
My first model making completed.
SLIDE COMPILATION
Compile my inspirations, design process, progress of models and images in slides.

REFLECTION
This assignment was a new experience for me, this is because it was my first assignment that required modelling. It was difficult, but in the end I produced something that I was happy with!
TGC AQUIRED
1.0:Discipline Specific Knowledge
This assignment deepened my understanding of design elements and principles in spacial design. Besides. I developed skills in translating two-dimensional forms to captivating three-dimensional representations through sketches and models.
